No. 20 Cardinals take three straight from Owls

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College volleyball team had the unenviable task of taking to the road Tuesday night to face the No. 20-ranked Otterbein University Cardinals, who improved their season record to 12-1 with a three-set win over the visiting Owls.

Otterbein claimed the non-conference contest by scores of 25-10, 25-16, 25-12.

Kenyon, which fell to 1-13 with the loss, was led on the attack by Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese and Aura Barinas, who both smacked four kills. Olivia Gumz, Hannah Schwemm, and Sophia Menke each added three kills. Schwemm also led the team with a dozen assists.

Defensively, the Owls got seven digs each from Lauren Blakemore and Joy Carstanjen, as well as six from Arianna Flota.

Otterbein, which recorded 41 kills throughout the match, compared to Kenyon's 19, was led by Brooke Barb and Lauren Neisel, who both threw down seven kills. Overall, the Cardinals had 14 players record at least one kill.

In the first set, Otterbein used a 6-0 run and then a 5-0 run to put plenty of separation between itself and Kenyon.

In the second set, the Owls put up an early fight and held a few slim leads, however, the Cardinals tied things up three times before taking a lead they would not relinquish. After the last of those three tied scores (7-7), Otterbein rattled off five of the next six points to move ahead 12-8. Kenyon pulled back within two, but Otterbein retaliated with another 6-0 run that, ultimately, decided the set.

The Cardinals then ran away with the third set, racing out to leads of 5-0 and 12-2 before sealing the deal.

Kenyon will now prepare for its first North Coast Athletic Conference contest of the season when it hosts The College of Wooster on Saturday at noon.
