McGhee wins twice, record falls at Wooster Invite

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's track and field team competed in its first scored meet of the season on Saturday afternoon, making the trip to The College of Wooster to compete in the four-team Wooster Invitational. 

The Owls had a very strong outing in the field led by Zavier McGhee and backed it up with a record-breaking showing in the track events, amassing 65 points and taking third for the day. 

McGhee led all Kenyon athletes with two first place finishes for the day, both in field events. The first came in the high jump, where he cleared the 1.80 meter (5-10 ¾) bar on his fourth attempt. His second win was in the triple jump, where he cleared 12.28 meters (40-3 ½). He also added a fourth place finish in the long jump, where he leapt 5.69 meters (18-8). 

Other strong finishes in the field came from JT Casarico, who took third in the triple jump with a 11.66 meter (38-3 ¼) mark. Noah Bartlett led the team in the pole vault, flying to a 3.45 (11-03 ¾) fourth place score, while Graham Yeager and J'Sun Gardner added fifth place finishes. Yeager's came in the shot put by way of a 11.64 meter (38-2 ¼) toss, while Garnder leapt 5.03 meters (16-6) in the long jump. 

Kenyon's record breaking performance came in the 4x200 relay, where the team of Julius Thompson, Kudzaishe Mhere, Satchel Barnes and Joshua Greville finished in 1:32.09, which just clipped the team's previous record of 1:32.16 set by Emmanuel Makelele, Tapiwa Gono Phiri, Kendall Weaver and Collin Witt in 2024. 

The Owls had perhaps its best event as a team of the day in the one mile, taking first, second and third. Charlie Blackmer led the charge at 4:27.65, while Dylan Sibbit was not far behind at 4:28.07. Owen Rodstrom completed the podium sweep with a 4:35.23 mark. 

In the 4x400, JT Casarico, Noah Bartlett, Mhere and Thompson ended the day with a third place finish, clocking in at 3:39.99. 

For the invitational, Wittenberg University took home the crown, amassing 118.50 points. Wooster finished second with 82.50 points, while Kenyon (65) and Ashland University (7) rounded out the standings. 

The Owls will head back to Wooster next weekend for another meet, starting at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 24.
