Blackmer leads Kenyon to record runs at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Led by sophomore Charlie Blackmer, the Kenyon College men's indoor track and field team tallied 18 points Saturday, set two program records, and finished in 15th place at Wittenberg University's Steemer Showcase, a highly-competitive meet with more than 20 teams from all NCAA divisions.

Blackmer accounted for a good chunk of Kenyon's point total by placing second in the 800-meter race. He clocked in a 1:53.50, which was not only a personal record, but a new Kenyon record. He vanquished his previous best of 1:56.19 set at last year's North Coast Athletic Conference Championship and topped the previous Kenyon record of 1:54.67 set by Joshia Child in the 1985 season.

At the end of the meet, Blackmer joined Josh Greville, Kudzaishe Mhere, and Julius Thompson to win the 4x400-meter relay in another record-setting run. The quartet clocked in at 3:21.31, which absolutely demolished the old Kenyon record of 3:28.97 set three seasons ago.

Like Blackmer, Dylan Sibbitt, a senior, also dialed up a personal record. He did so in the mile run, an event he finished in 4:24.96, which was good for 15th place. His previous top time was 4:28.07, which he established a couple weeks ago at The College of Wooster.

The Owls had several other athletes who posted top-25 individual finishes in the crowded meet. One of those was senior Colt Murphy, who claimed 17th place in the 5,000-meter race. He crossed the finish line with a time of 15:28.07. In the same race, senior Owen Rodstrom placed 21st in 15:37.79 and sophomore Caleb Low placed 23rd in 15:38.82.

Mhere, a sophomore who was a part of that record relay, also took 21st place in the 60-meter dash, finishing in 7.13.

In field events, sophomore Graham Yeager claimed 23rd place in the weight throw, turning in a best measurement of 45-3 ½ (13.80m). That went in the books as another personal best, erasing his previous best of 42-2 (12.85m), charted last week at Wooster. Zavier McGhee, a first-year, added a 16th-place showing in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-10 ¾ (1.80m).

Finally, the Owls made a lot of noise in the triple jump with a trio of top-20 finishes. Heading up that group was Greville, a senior who covered 40-3 ¼ (12.27m) for 11th place. McGhee was 13th with a leap of 39-4 ½, while JT Casarico, a sophomore, placed 18th with a measurement of 37-5 (11.40m).
