Pair of Owls reach ITA semifinals

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -- Two members of the Kenyon College men's tennis team reach semifinal-round play during the weekend-long Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championship, hosted by Wabash College.

In singles play sophomore Maximo Llamas Castellanos came up one win shy of reaching the final match, while in doubles action Llamas Castellanos paired up with senior Alejandro Gonzalez to make it to the semifinals.

Llamas Castellanos, who was playing in the 64-player A Flight for singles, cruised through his first three matches, knocking off opponents from Baldwin Wallace University, Millikin University, and Denison University. In the quarterfinal, he faced off against
George Kosseifi from Case Western Reserve University and pulled out a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win.

That win launched Llamas Castellanos into the semifinal round, where he matched up against Aidan Borosko from Denison. This time around, Llamas Castellanos could not pull out the victory, as Borosko stopped him in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.

In other singles action for the Owls, sophomores Stylianos Papamichael and Sree Kondaveeti reached the quarterfinal round of play in the 32-player B Flight. Papamichael got first- and second-round wins over opponents from Augustana College and Ohio Northern University, respectively, before falling in the quarterfinal match 7-5, 6-1 to Leon Chen from Case Western Reserve. Kondaveeti logged wins against opponents from Anderson University and Ohio Northern before bowing out with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Rohit Jain from Case Western Reserve.

In doubles play, there was just one flight that included 64 pairings. Llamas Castellanos and Gonzalez got through the first three rounds by scores of 8-2, 8-3, and 8-3 against respective opponents from Wabash, Wheaton College, and Denison.  In the quarterfinals, they outlasted, 8-6,  Heyang Li and Timothy Nguyen from the University of Chicago. In the semifinals, however, they lost by that same score to Chase Kelley and Jesse Yang, also from Chicago.
