Kenyon women open outdoor season at Emory

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Kenyon College's women's outdoor track and field season got underway as the Owls competed at the two-day Emory University Spring Break Classic. Senior Anna Brown continued her stellar career with first-place finishes on both Friday and Saturday, and the Owls added a handful of other top-12 finishes as the team started to ramp up for the spring.

Brown's big outing started with a photo finish victory on Friday. In the 1,500-meter invitational, the mid-distance runner stopped the clock at 4:37.22, claiming the crown by a minuscule 0.01 margin. Brown's time marked a career-best, and it came in just 0.21 seconds shy of Kelly Wilder's 33-year-old Kenyon record in the event.

Backing up her first big win, Brown also bested the field in Saturday's 800-meter race with another career-best performance. The senior crossed the finish line at 2:11.72, shattering her own program record of 2:14.43 set back on May 10, 2024.

The Owls had some other strong showings to start the two-day outing, with a pair of top-12 finishers in the 5,000-meter invitational on Friday. Olivia Ide, a junior, raced out to a fifth-place finish, clocking in at 18:40.31. Sophomore Lucie Prior placed 12th in the event, and her time of 19:12.16 marked a personal best.

Kenyon added two more top-12 finishes in field events on day two. Noa Helmbrecht, another sophomore, finished 12th in the qualifying round of the 100-meter dash with a career-best time of 12.49, and Helmbrecht partnered with Lia Wahl, Georgia Yatrakis, and Ari Sobel for Kenyon's 10th-place 4x100-meter relay team. The Owls quartet clocked in at 49.94.

In field events, Penelope Artemis placed 12th in Friday's hammer throw and 20th in Saturday's shot put. The sophomore's best hammer attempt travelled 40.56 meters (133-1), and her best shot put mark was 10.86 meters (35-7 ¾).

Up next, the Owls will compete much closer to home as Kenyon will take the short trip to Denison University on Saturday, March 28, for the Denison Lid-Lifter.
