Oakes earns sixth career NCAC weekly award

CLEVELAND -- For the third time this season and the sixth time in his collegiate career, Kenyon College junior Jonathan Oakes was selected as the North Coast Athletic Conference's (NCAC) Athlete of the Week for men's golf.

The NCAC made the announcement Tuesday and Oakes' selection was based on his performance this past weekend in the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational at the Pine Lakes Course in Jekyll Island, Georgia.

Among 150 golfers participating in the Invitational, Oakes finished in a tie for 11th place with a final three-round score of 209, which was seven-under-par on the par-72 course. Oakes did not get off to the start he wanted, firing a two-over 74 in Friday's first round. He more than made up for that by carding a three-under 69 on Saturday and a field-best six-under-par on Sunday. It was the third time in his Kenyon career he fired a six-under 66.

Oakes had six birdies in his first round, but also four bogeys and two doubles. When he ironed things out over the last two rounds, he penciled in nine more birdies, two eagles, and just two bogeys with one double.

Oakes' final score of 209 was just one stroke shy of tying the Kenyon program record for an individual score in a three-round tournament.

Additionally, Oakes' stellar showing helped land the Owls, as a team, in a tie for fifth place in a field of 30 teams, including 17 teams with top-25 national rankings.
