Owls drop close match with Tartans

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Opening spring break play at the United States Tennis Association's National Campus on Wednesday, the No. 16-ranked Kenyon College women's tennis team dropped a close 5-2 battle with No. 13-ranked Carnegie Mellon University.

Although the final score did not indicate the match was close, four of the six singles matches went to a third set, with Carnegie Mellon gaining the edge in three of those four.

The Tartans took control early, winning the doubles team point by sweeping all three matches. Kenyon fell 6-2 at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, while the Owls duo of Kiara Komlodi and Shadia Amado Aguad was defeated 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Carnegie Mellon then moved its team lead to 2-0 after a win at No. 6 singles, but Kenyon senior Eleni Lazaridou countered and got the Owls on the board, taking the No. 1 singles match by a 6-1, 6-4 count over Kotistha Modak.

The remaining four singles matches all went down to the wire. At No. 2 singles, Jane Wong, the No. 9-ranked singles player in NCAA Division III, outlasted Kenyon sophomore Hana Nouaime 6-0, 2-6, 6-3. Moments later, Ika Kanumuri, the No. 3-ranked singles player, clinched the team win for the Tartans as she held on for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win against Amado Aguad.

Since the Tartans had clinched the team win at that point, the last two singles matches were decided by third-set tiebreakers. At No. 2 singles, No. 18-ranked Shelly Zinchenko rallied to defeat Kenyon's No. 22-ranked Kiara Komlodi 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4). Ana finally, at No. 5 singles, Kenyon sophomore Clare Hudson capped things off with a 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Divya Venkatarama.

The Owls, now owners of a 4-2 record, will get right back to action tomorrow, taking on No. 25-ranked Christopher Newport University at 11 a.m.

On the other side of the court, the win improved Carnegie Mellon's record to 9-0.
