Kenyon crafts 8-0 run to defeat DePauw

Box Score GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- DePauw University outscored Kenyon College 3-0 in the first nine minutes of Saturday's men's lacrosse game at Reavis Stadium. After that, the visiting Owls took control, using an 8-0 run to springboard to a 10-6 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win.

The victory kept Kenyon in a tie atop the NCAC standings and set up a showdown with Oberlin College, the other team sharing that first-place spot with the Owls. Kenyon, now 9-6 overall and 5-1 in conference contests, will host Oberlin, now 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the NCAC, on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Paving the way to that showdown was Kenyon's eight-goal run against the Tigers. It started with a man-up goal from Tanner Lewis at the 3:57 mark of the first quarter and ended with another Lewis goal at the 6:21 mark of the third quarter.

In between those two Lewis' tallies, six different Owls scored. That group included Gavin Gumucio, David Chintala, Harrison Curtiss, Luke Riney, Mike Kapral, and Henry Powell, who also had three assists in the run and four assists for the game.

Meanwhile, Kenyon's defense held the Tigers scoreless for nearly 32 minutes. In that span, DePauw managed just five shots and turned the ball over nine times. The Kenyon defense, throughout the game, was credited with seven caused turnovers.

Goalkeeper Adam Hall made ten saves for the Owls, four of which came during that scoreless drought for the Tigers. With two games left in the regular season, Hall is within striking distance of the program record for career saves, set at 772 by James Peace '71.

DePauw (5-8, 1-5 NCAC) scored the last goal of the third quarter and the first of the fourth quarter to bring the score to 8-5, but the Tigers would get no closer. Two fourth-quarter goals from Lewis put a cap on the Kenyon scoring and put DePauw out of reach.

Lewis finished with four goals, but it was Powell who had the team lead with five points on a goal and four assists. Gumucio added two assists to his goal for a three-point game.

Kenyon out-shot DePauw 52-28 and Will Jordan dominated face-offs for the Owls, winning 17 times in 20 attempts.
