Owls fall to Big Red, finish second in NCAC race

GAMBIER, Ohio -- With the North Coast Athletic Conference men's tennis regular-season title on the line Saturday, the No. 4-ranked Denison University Big Red delivered a convincing 7-0 defeat to the No. 10-ranked Kenyon College Owls inside the Jasper Tennis Center.

The conference title is Denison's sixth straight. The Big Red are now 23-2 overall and will host the conference tournament next weekend. The loss dropped the Owls to 20-3 overall. As the top two seeds in the conference tournament, both Kenyon and Denison will get a bye through Friday's quarterfinal round and both will begin play in Saturday's semifinal round.

Denison swept the doubles matches to open play on Saturday. Kenyon's top effort in doubles came from the No. 1 team of Juozas Cioladis and Maximo Llamas Castellanos, who were defeated 6-3.

In singles play, both Llamas Castellanos and Alejandro Gonzalez put up strong fights, but eventually lost in three sets. Llamas Castellanos, playing at the No. 2 spot in the Kenyon lineup, fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Kael Shah, while Gonzalez, playing in the No. 1 spot, was defeated by Ethan Green, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5.

Cioladis suffered an ankle injury at No. 4 singles, which gave the Big Red a win by retirement and Paulo Pocasangre Kreling dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match at No. 3 singles to Jacob Patterson.

The Big Red then took the No. 5 and No. 6 matches in straight sets to complete the sweep.
