Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Owls take command of NCAC with overtime win

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In a game that spanned two days and seven periods of play, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team outlasted the Oberlin College Yeomen to record an 11-10 win in a battle of teams that previously shared first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) standings.

The game, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was halted during halftime due to persistent lightning in the area. Play resumed Thursday on The Field at Benson Bowl and the contest needed three overtime periods before it was decided.

After all that, the outcome boiled down to an offside call and the reaction to the call.

Oberlin won the opening faceoff of the third overtime period and took the ball deep into its own territory. When the Yeomen brought the ball back over the midfield stripe, they were called for offside. The ball was put on the turf and then quickly scooped up by Kenyon junior Ben Devitis, who moved forward on the whistle and found senior Gavin Gumucio streaking up the middle of the Oberlin zone. Gumucio gathered in Devitis' pass in stride and fired home the game-winner, beating Oberlin goalkeeper Nolan Grieshaber to the top left corner.

That goal, and the win, moved Kenyon into sole possession of first place in the conference standings. The Owls are now 10-6 overall and 6-1 in the NCAC. A win at The College of Wooster on Saturday will give the Owls the NCAC regular-season title and the right to host NCAC Tournament games, scheduled for next week.

On Wednesday, when the game first started, Oberlin jumped out to a 4-1 lead and wrapped up the first quarter with a 4-2 advantage. David Chintala, who scored the final goal of the first quarter for Kenyon, carried momentum into the second frame, scoring twice more to tie the game at 5-5.

With 2:10 left before the half, Mike Kapral scored the go-ahead goal in a man-up situation for Kenyon. The teams made it to halftime, with Kenyon leading 5-6, before weather put a pause on things.

Thursday, Chintala and Kapral scored again, giving Kenyon an 8-6 lead through three quarters of play. Oberlin then scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to move ahead 9-8, but Harrison Curtiss responded for Kenyon bringing the game even again with 5:14 left.

A little more than four minutes later, Curtiss struck again. Taking a feed from Gumucio, he put the Owls ahead, 10-9 with 1:08 left in regulation. Oberlin won the ensuing faceoff, took two unsuccessful shots and called a timeout with nine seconds left. When the Yeomen got back on the field, it was Jacob Starcke who fired the game-tying shot past Kenyon goalkeeper Adam Hall, with just 1.8 seconds remaining.

Both Hall and Grieshaber made big-time saves in overtime, pushing the contest through two scoreless extra sessions. Hall finished with 13 saves for the game, while Grieshaber had 18, as Kenyon outshot the Yeomen 55-41. Hall now has 770 career saves and is just two shy of tying the program record of 772, set by James Peace '71.

Back in the offensive zone, Chintala led Kenyon with four goals. Kapral had three. Curtiss had two and an assist, while Gumucio and Lewis each contributed a goal and two assists.
