Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Kenyon tops JCU, stays perfect in NCAC

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Tanner Lewis tallied a five-point game and Gavin Gumucio scored four times, as the two helped push the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team to a 13-7 triumph over John Carroll University on The Field at Benson Bowl.

The result of the Wednesday evening contest improved Kenyon's overall record to 7-5, but more importantly it kept the Owls perfect in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play with a 3-0 mark. On the other side of the field, the visiting Blue Streaks fell to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

The game got off to a bit of a slow start for Kenyon, which saw John Carroll take early 1-0 and 2-1 leads, but David Chintala, Gumucio, and Alex Haag all scored within the final four minutes of the first quarter to kick-start the Owls offense and give their Kenyon team a 4-2 lead.

Second-quarter play was also slow-paced for the offenses, with each team scoring just once. Kenyon out-shot John Carroll 25-10 over those first two quarters of play, but John Carroll goalkeeper Devin Holder made 10 saves to keep his team in the game, trailing just 5-3 at halftime.

Kenyon made the right adjustments during the break and went right after Holder and the Blue Streaks defense. Within a minute-and-a-half span, the Owls netted two goals from Lewis and one from Kapral. John Carroll scored next to make it 8-4 in favor of Kenyon, but, before the quarter came to a conclusion, the Owls generated four more goals to take a 12-4 advantage into the final 15 minutes of play.

John Carroll turned the tide in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late. The Blue Streaks out-shot Kenyon, 13-8, and out-scored Kenyon, 3-1, only to narrow its losing margin to six.

Kenyon out-shot John Carroll, 46-32, for the game. Holder ended up with 18 saves, while Kenyon goalkeeper Adam Hall registered 13 saves.

Lewis' five points came on two goals and three assists. Chintala had two goals and two assists to match Gumucio's four-point game. Haag ended up with a goal and two assists, Mike Kapral scored twice and Harrison Curtiss posted two assists.

Will Jordan did an excellent job of keeping possession with Kenyon throughout the game. He won 18-of-23 face-offs and scooped up a game-high nine ground balls.

Kenyon's next game will be at home, too. The Owls will entertain Wabash College on Saturday in a conference contest that starts at 1 p.m.
