Owls close regular season with doubleheader at DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Kenyon College softball team closed the 2026 regular season with a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) road doubleheader against DePauw University on Saturday afternoon, hoping to earn a spot in the conference tournament for the first time since 2019.

After getting off to a slow start in game one, the Owls' offense came to life in game too, but it wasn't enough to catch the Tigers, who dealt the visitors 8-0 and 9-7 defeats.

Game two was the better showing for Kenyon, who got on the board in the top of the first inning by way of a Keala Montgomery leadoff home run. DePauw took a lead with two runs off of starting pitcher Izzy Akin, but Montgomery crossed the plate again in the top of the second on an RBI from Leah Schlissberg

The Tigers opened up a lead in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs to take a 6-2 advantage. Montgomery circled the bags again to chip away at the lead in the fourth, when Maeve McLaughlin singled for an RBI.

Akin ended her day in the fifth, serving up a 4.1 inning start that yielded five earned runs. Jillian Messinger replaced her on the mound and turned in a great outing, going 1.2 innings with just two hits and one earned run to keep the Owls in it.

Montgomery added to her impressive day in the sixth, sending another solo homer to set the score 7-4 DePauw, with all four runs belonging to the junior, but two more Tiger runs in the bottom of the inning gave the home team a 9-4 lead with just a half inning to go.

In the top of the seventh, Kenyon did its best to mount a comeback, scoring three times. Anna Engler sent a single down the right field line to score Morgan Gardner. Emma Cashell sent a two-out single to right that scored Peyton Green and Brooke Avila, but that was all the Owls could muster, falling 9-7.

Back in game one, Kenyon just couldn't get anything going from the plate thanks to an excellent performance from DePauw starter Alex Romero Salas, who dealt an impressive five scoreless innings that yielded only two hits, four strikeouts and no walks.

Montgomery ripped one of those hits in the top of the first, and moved into scoring position after Schlissberg was hit by a pitch, but the Owls could not convert. Avila singled up the middle in the fourth, but the Tigers had already amassed a 6-0 advantage which expanded to 8-0 by the end of the fifth for the loss.

Kenyon's conference record drops to 7-7 with the losses, putting them firmly in fourth place in the NCAC standings and currently in the conference tournament. If The College of Wooster wins both games of its home doubleheader against Denison University tomorrow, the Owls and the Scots will need a tiebreaker to determine who earns a spot in the four-team playoff.

The NCAC Tournament will begin on May 7 from the No. 1 seed's park, which is yet to be determined.
