Owls claim second place at Kuhn Memorial

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- With four scoring golfers placing inside the top-15, Kenyon College grabbed the runner-up spot among 13 women's teams competing at Allegheny College's Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational.

The two-day, two-round Memorial played out at the par-72 Country Club of Meadville on Sunday and Monday. The Owls, as a team, posted back-to-back scores of 312, finishing with 624 strokes and being bested only by Carnegie Mellon University, which won the Memorial with a low count of 597 strokes.

The Owls were paced by a couple of sophomores in Camryn Nelson and Sasha Belova. Nelson recorded a four-over 76 on Sunday and then a five-over 77 on Monday. Her two-day total of 153 put her in an individual tie for sixth place with Belova, who scored rounds of 79 and 74.

Five strokes back of those two was Kenyon first-year Claire Liu. She finished in a tie for 11th place after carding rounds of 78 and 80. Another Kenyon first-year, Demi Hampilos, was just two strokes off Liu's score. Hampilos totaled up a 160 with rounds of 79 and 81. She tied for 13th place in the field of 73 golfers.

Nelson, Belova, and Liu tied for the team lead with three birdies apiece across their two rounds.

A couple of North Coast Athletic Conference teams finished just behind Kenyon in the final standings. John Carroll University and Wittenberg University tied for third place with final stroke counts of 653.

The Owls will keep things moving along next week, as they are slated to compete in Carnegie Mellon's Tartan Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
