GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College sophomore
Rachel Hall scored two early goals Saturday and the Ladies field hockey team held on for a 4-2 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers. The goals were Hall's team-leading seventh and eighth of the season.
Hall's first goal came 12 minutes into the game and she just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Freshman
Christine Bloom brought the ball into play down the right sideline. She then cut up near the end line and fired in a pass across the front of the goal. Her pass hit a Wittenberg defender and dropped to the turf right in front of Hall, who blasted it past Tigers goalkeeper Alie Marousek.
Less than four minutes later, Hall scored again, but before she could
Julie Freedman another Kenyon sophomore, registered her seventh goal of the season. Freedman's goal developed off a penalty corner and was set up by sophomore
Sammy Johnston.
With a comfortable 3-0 lead, the Ladies headed toward the second half of play, but Wittenberg wrestled away momentum with a quick score off a penalty corner. Ten minutes later, the Tigers struck again and moved to within one goal of a tired Ladies' team.
With just two subs to shuffle in and out of the game, Kenyon fought through the game's final minutes and put things away with a goal from sophomore
Cecilia Depman. She scored in goal-mouth traffic off an assist from freshman
Hannah Drake.
The Ladies are now 8-6 overall and are tied for second place with Denison University in the NCAC standings. Both teams have 7-3 conference records and will square off Wednesday at Denison. Earlier in the year, Kenyon won a 3-1 home game against the Big Red.
