GAMBIER, Ohio – Saturday marked the second time this week an 11-win team visited Mavec Field to tangle with Kenyon College in North Coast Athletic Conference men's soccer action. Unlike Wednesday's encounter, in which the Lords knocked off No. 12 Hiram College, 2-0, Allegheny College was able to stave off Kenyon's upset bid by a 2-1 margin.
Lingering in a 1-1 tie since the 41st minute, neither team was able to separate itself for the bulk of the second half. Two stingy defenses kept the scoring opportunities to a minimum, but the Gators seized the opportunity when a window opened in the 88th minute. Chris Brennan set up Andrew Miller on the game-deciding goal and Allegheny (12-1-1, 4-0-1) escaped with its 12th win of the season.
The two teams were evenly-matched throughout the game, as evidenced by a fairly balanced stat page. The Lords held slight advantages in shots (17-15) and corner kicks (4-3), while goalies John Lichina and
James Smith made five saves apiece.
Kenyon (6-5-2, 2-1-2 NCAC) opened the scoring in the 28th minute when sophomore
Sam Justice scored his second goal of the week. Sophomore
Rei Mitsuyama sent a corner kick to the far side of the goal where Justice was waiting to finish off the leaping header. For Mitsuyama, it marked the second time in as many games he assisted on a goal off of a corner kick.
The Lords return to their home pitch Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. for another conference clash against the College of Wooster.
