GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College field hockey team did everything it could to notch a conference victory Saturday. Unfortunately for the Ladies, 39 shots and 29 penalty corners were not enough. Oberlin College tightened up its defense, survived the bombardment, and escaped McBride Field with a 1-0 upset.
Kenyon (8-8, 7-5 NCAC) was thoroughly dominant in almost every aspect of the game, but the Ladies just could not get the ball across the goal line. After subbing into the game early on, Oberlin goalkeeper Carmen Azevedo ended up making 18 saves to preserve the win for the Yeowomen (4-9, 3-9 NCAC).
The game's lone goal came with just 6:55 left on the clock. Oberlin midfielder Karin Yoshida launched a long pass up the middle of the field. Forward Jodi Helsel got free on a breakaway and was the first one to the ball. When she neared the Kenyon cage, she fired her shot past Kenyon keeper
Sydney Carney-Knisely who came out of goal to cut down the angle. The shot was one of just six for the Yeowomen.
The loss for Kenyon puts a serious crimp in the Ladies' postseason plans. With two games left in the regular season, the Ladies are tied for third place with Ohio Wesleyan University and the College of Wooster. The Ladies' final two games are Tuesday at home against Wooster and Saturday on the road at first-place DePauw University.
