GAMBIER, Ohio – Two teams jockeying for position in next week's North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey tournament clashed Tuesday afternoon on McBride Field. Kenyon College and the College of Wooster entered the contest with identical 7-5 NCAC records, but the Fighting Scots improved that mark after stellar performances from Clare Nelson-Johnson and Nikki Sever carried them to a 5-2 victory.
The Ladies (8-9, 7-6 NCAC) struck in a hurry, scoring before the game was even 90 seconds old. Freshman
Maddie Breschi fired in a shot from the top of the arc off of a
Sammy Johnston assist, but the early goal couldn't withstand the oncoming barrage from Nelson-Johnson and Sever.
Nelson-Johnson produced a pair of goals in quick succession in the 13th and 14th minutes to vault Wooster (9-8, 8-5 NCAC) into the lead. She was back at it again in the 26th minute to finish off her hat trick and give the Scots a 3-1 cushion.
Sever assisted on the last two of Nelson-Johnson's scores, but the roles reversed in the 31st minute. Sever finished off a pass from Nelson-Johnson to give the Scots a 4-1 advantage at halftime.
The pace slowed in the second half with each team scoring once. Sever was in the mix again for Wooster with her third assist of the game, this time to Kate Brondyk in the 52nd minute. Kenyon's goal came on sophomore
Rachel Hall's team-leading ninth tally at 44:09. Sophomore
Julie Freedman assisted on the score.
The loss dropped the Ladies a half-game behind Ohio Wesleyan University (9-6, 7-5 NCAC) for the fourth and final spot in the NCAC tournament. The Battling Bishops have a pair of road games remaining at Oberlin College Wednesday and at Wittenberg University Friday. Kenyon finishes up its schedule Saturday at DePauw University (15-1, 13-0 NCAC).
