Box Score GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's soccer team hosted rival Ohio Wesleyan University Wednesday afternoon in a clash with North Coast Athletic Conference tournament implications for both teams. Separated by two points in the standings at the start of play, the Lords and No. 21 Battling Bishops were drawn for 60 minutes before OWU scored twice in an 11-minute span to produce a 2-0 triumph on the Mavec Field pitch.
The victory moved Ohio Wesleyan (12-2-3, 6-1-1 NCAC) to the top of the conference standings with Kenyon (8-6-2, 4-2-2 NCAC) currently sitting in fifth place. The Lords are just two points away from a postseason position, though. A win in the season finale Saturday afternoon at Wittenberg University is now a must, but Kenyon also needs help to finish in one of the top four spots.
The chance for the Lords to control their own fate slipped away in the 60th minute when Ben Witkoff fired a shot from the left side of the box that deflected off the right post and into the net. The Bishops then added a big insurance goal in the 71st minute thanks to a Colton Bloecher header off an assist from his brother, Gunnar.
Kenyon outshot OWU, 13-10, but the advantage didn't translate into a score. Goalie Paul Hendricks made three saves to keep the Lords off the board.
The Battling Bishops have won seven-straight against Kenyon and haven't lost in Gambier since the 1997 season.
