DELAWARE, Ohio (October 26, 2011) For nearly 85 minutes Wednesday night, Kenyon College stood toe-to-toe with the No. 4-ranked men's soccer team in the nation. Then with 5:11 remaining in the game, Ohio Wesleyan University showed its savvy and produced the game-winning goal for a 2-1 decision over the Lords in North Coast Athletic Conference action in Delaware.
Kenyon (6-8-2, 3-4-1 NCAC) wasted little time in landing the first jab with a goal ten minutes into the contest. Freshman Nate Petrou served the ball into the box from the left side and junior Lewis Williams-Gray finished it off with a header.
The quick strike gave the Lords enough momentum to control the remainder of the first half. Kenyon had more shots, 7-6, corners, 4-2, and saves, 2-1, than the Battling Bishops in the period and took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Ohio Wesleyan (16-1-0, 8-0-0 NCAC) picked up its aggressiveness looking for the tying goal after the break. The Bishops finally found it in the 67th minute when senior Travis Wall scored his 12th goal of the season.
Still, Kenyon kept the tie intact for more than 17 minutes. Just when the contest seemed destined for overtime, OWU used two quick passes to set up the deciding strike. Matt Shadoan, who had re-entered the game one minute prior, put it in the back of the net to keep the Battling Bishops undefeated in NCAC play.
The loss was not only the Lords' sixth-straight to Ohio Wesleyan, but also dealt their postseason hopes a critical blow. Even with a win in Saturday's home finale against Wabash College, which would give Kenyon 13 points and potentially move the team into a fourth-place tie, the Lords would come up short once the conference's tie-breaking procedures are enacted.
Kenyon will kick off the action with the Little Giants at 3 p.m. at Mavec Field.
