GAMBIER, Ohio (October 22, 2011) Kenyon College freshmen
Logan Konkol and
Nate Petrou got together for an early score which ultimately held up as the game-winner for the Lords soccer team Saturday. After the youngsters hooked up in the ninth minute, the Kenyon defense stonewalled Wittenberg University for the remaining 81 to move the Lords' North Coast Athletic Conference record to 3-3-1.
The victory gave Kenyon (6-7-2 overall) ten points and sole possession of fifth place in the NCAC standings. That puts the Lords squarely in the mix for one of the four spots in the upcoming conference tournament.
Kenyon's defense certainly was in postseason form Saturday. The Lords only allowed the Tigers (5-10-1, 1-6-0 NCAC) to take nine shots and limited Wittenberg to one corner kick to post their second straight shutout.
That defensive pressure kept Kenyon in control after posting its lone score before the game was ten minutes old. For Konkol, the goal was his second of the season and Petrou was credited with his first assist. Petrou now has five total points on the campaign, which ranks third on the team.
Heading into the final week of the season, the Lords can help their bid for the NCAC tournament if they play well in a couple of tough contests. First up is a trip to No. 4 Ohio Wesleyan University Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The Battling Bishops are on a 15-game winning streak after dropping their season opener to No. 2 Messiah College.
