Early goal stands up as Kenyon clips Centre

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's soccer team didn't score often Friday night, but scoring early proved to be enough for a 1-0 non-conference victory against visiting Centre College. Sophomore Rei Mitsuyama's fifth-minute goal provided the only offense for the Lords and three saves from senior goalie James Smith made it stand up as the game-winner.

Kenyon got on the scoreboard when Mitsuyama went streaking into Centre territory to the left of the net. He was the intended target of a long pass, but a Colonel defender won the footrace and touched the ball to goalie Zach Sosnovich to clear the box. Mitsuyama continued to hustle, leapt into the air, and knocked down Sosnovich's kick. The ball bounced between the off-balance players, but Mitsuyama maintained control of his body long enough to flick the ball off of his foot into the Centre goal.

It was the only time the Lords could solve Sosnovich on the game. The Centre keeper went on to save the remaining six shots Kenyon directed on goal. Smith didn't have as many chances as Sosnovich, but turned back all three shots sent his direction to earn his second shutout of the season.

The Lords will cap their busy week Saturday when they play for the third time in five days. Kenyon hosts cross-county rival Mount Vernon Nazarene University on McBride Field at 3 p.m.
