Jemison scores twice, Lords roar past Lions

GAMBIER, Ohio – The College of Mount St. Joseph scored first, but the Kenyon College men's soccer team had the last laugh Sunday at Mavec Field. The Lords used a pair of goals from senior J.J. Jemison to earn a 4-1 victory over the Lions, their first of the young season.

Jemison gave Kenyon (1-1-0) the lead in the 31st minute with a deep shot that had beautiful touch on it. The ball sailed more than 30 yards, stayed beyond the reach of the goalie and nestled into the back corner of the net. That 2-1 advantage lasted until the 69th minute when junior Andrew Parmelee picked off the ball and assisted Jemison on his second score of the contest.

Mount St. Joseph (0-1-1) needed only 3:39 seconds to get the scoring started. It took the Lords a bit longer to answer, but freshman Jeremiah Barnes' first collegiate goal off a Daniel Lipsey through-ball at the 27:00 mark got the Kenyon offense going. Following Jemison's two scores, sophomore Alex Christoff added the Lords' final goal in the 70th minute.

Kenyon's aggressive mindset resulted in a whopping 25-8 advantage in shots. The Lords defense made sure the Lions were firing off low-percentage attempts as five of their shots ended up off target. Senior goalie James Smith saved the other two to set up Kenyon's comfortable margin of victory.

Kenyon hits the road on Thursday for a non-conference clash against Heidelberg University at 4 p.m.
