Box Score
GAMBIER, Ohio – In their final tune-up before facing the bulk of their conference schedule, the Kenyon College Lords fell victim Tuesday to a pair of quick strikes from the visiting Heidelberg University men's soccer team. Early in the second half, the Student Princes scored twice within 23 seconds and held on for a 3-2 win at Mavec Field.
The loss was the first for the Lords since dropping a 2-1 decision at Centre College on September 7. It also ended Kenyon's six-game unbeaten streak and moved the Lords' overall season record to 7-3-1. Heidelberg improved to 6-2-0 with the win.
In the game's 60th minute with the score tied 1-1, Heidelberg's Tyler Eoff beat Kenyon keeper
Sam Clougher at close range. Just 23 seconds later, Nico Samaniego carved through the Kenyon defense with a couple of slick moves and then buried the ball into the Kenyon net for a 3-1 Heidelberg advantage.
Stunned, but not overwhelmed, the Lords answered quickly. At the 61:40 mark, junior
Alex Christoff headed the ball into the net off an assist from
Tony Amolo. It was Christoff's second goal of the season.
Over the last 20 minutes of play Kenyon's
Rei Mitsuyama,
Jeremiah Barnes, and
Nate Petrou all had good chances to tie the game up, but each shot narrowly missed its mark and the Student Princes held on for the win.
Back in the first half, freshman
Jordan Glassman scored the Lords' first goal. Using a pass from Christoff, Glassman drove the left side of the box and launched his shot into the left side of the goal. It was his sixth goal of the season, as well as his sixth in the last five games.
From here on out, it will be nothing but North Coast Athletic Conference games for the Lords, who began the run with a trip to Allegheny College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest against the Gators.
