GAMBIER, Ohio – An early score by the Quakers was all that stood between the Kenyon College field hockey team and perfection in Friday afternoon's win over the Earlham Quakers. The Ladies dominated the Quakers in nearly every way, leading to a 7-1 victory.
Rachel Hall chalked up her second hat trick of the season, scoring four goals total in the match.
Hall scored the first three Kenyon goals, all inside of an eight-minute window in the first half. Her first goal came as the clock struck the 23-minute mark when she and Maddie Breschi connected for the first of two occasions. Breschi fed in a pass from the top of the striking circle to Hall, who finished the job from outside of the far post to tie the game at one.
Nearly five minutes later, the duo struck for a second time when from the far side of the field Breschi found Hall out in front of the Earlham cage. Hall wrapped her shot around a Quaker defender and past Earlham goaltender Helen Titcomb to give Kenyon the lead. Hall and Sammy Johnston reenacted the same pattern 1:51 later to complete Hall's hat trick.
The junior was not quite finished when she tallied her fourth goal of the game on the other side of halftime, this time on a pass from Christine Bloom. The goal marked Hall's league-leading 14th of the season. She came into the match in a three-way tie with Denison's Alex B. Berman and Katie McMahon for the conference lead in goals scored. Hall now has two hat tricks on the season, the other coming against Randolph-Macon College on Sept. 8, and is her third multi-goal game of the season.
Kenyon took a 4-1 lead into halftime, courtesy of Hannah Drake's third goal of the season that came unassisted at 33:29.
Despite Hall stealing the show with her four-goal performance, Breschi also lit up the scoreboard with two assists and a goal, good for four points. Her score came in the 47th minute from Cecilia Depman. It was Breschi's eighth goal on the year.
Sammy Johnston also hit the back of the net with her second goal of the season to close the scoring run in the 52nd minute.
The Ladies' defense allowed just one goal, that coming at 16:15, before clamping down on defense and controlling ball possession for the remainder of the contest. Earlham was able to put together seven shots total, with only two in the entire second half. Kenyon fired off 22 total shots. The Ladies also held a vast advantage in penalty corners, 21-5.
Sydney Carney-Knisely and Michelle Picard teamed up in between the posts, but the Kenyon defense kept the Quakers from tallying any shots on goal, with exception to their lone goal. The Ladies' Morgen Barrosso tallied an individual save when sacrificing herself to block an Earlham shot in the first half.
Kenyon (8-4, 6-2 NCAC) has two games remaining on their current homestand. They will host DePauw University tomorrow at 4 p.m. at McBride Field, which follows Lords Football.
