GAMBIER, Ohio – Trying to gain ground in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings, the Kenyon College field hockey team gave the first-place DePauw University Tigers a run for their money Saturday at McBride Field. The Tigers, however, scored three first-half goals, and went on to chalk up a 4-2 victory.

DePauw is now 10-3 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the NCAC. The loss, which halted a three-game win streak for the Ladies, dropped Kenyon to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the conference. The Ladies still maintain third place in the standings, one game ahead of The College of Wooster and two-and-a-half games behind second-place Denison University.

The Ladies did get off to an ideal start against DePauw. Less than two minutes into the contest, they forced a penalty corner. Junior Rachel Hall sent the ball into play, directing it to sophomore Maddie Breschi, who stood at the top of the circle. Breschi gathered the pass and fired her shot right through the middle of the Tigers' defense and into the back of the cage. It was her ninth goal of the season and her third in her last three games.

That lead stood for nearly 25 minutes. At the 25:40 mark, however, DePauw was awarded a penalty stroke. Taylor Helms took the honors for the Tigers and steered her shot into the left corner of the Kenyon cage. That goal sparked quite an outburst for the DePauw offense, which pumped in two more goals before the half and moved ahead 3-1.

Kenyon did not throw in the towel. In fact, the Ladies kept pressure on the Tigers throughout the second half. About mid-way through the half, the pressure paid off. Junior Julie Freedman took a shot from the right side of the circle. It bounced around a couple of times, hit a defender, and finally trickled over the goal line, cutting the Tigers' lead to just one.

DePauw held off Kenyon the rest of the way and knocked home an insurance goal at the 68:54 mark to put a lid on all scoring.

Defensively, senior goalkeeper Sydney Carney-Knisely turned in a stellar showing and kept the Ladies in the hunt by racking up a season-high 12 saves. Morgen Barroso and Emmy Weiner each contributed a defensive save for the Ladies, who next host Wittenberg University on Wednesday, October 16.
