DELAWARE, Ohio – The Kenyon College Lords soccer team had undefeated and No. 1-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University on the ropes Tuesday night at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex. The Lords never did deliver the knockout blow, but they ended up carding a 1-1 draw, putting the first blemish on the Battling Bishop's record.
Kenyon came out firing under the lights. The Lords took the game's first five shots and earned six corner kicks within the first 16 minutes of play. Ohio Wesleyan weathered the storm and settled things back down until the 32:05 mark. That's when Kenyon senior
Andrew Parmelee, the reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week, drew first blood. He scored on a header off a pass struck by sophomore
Jeremiah Barnes. The goal was Parmelee's fifth of the season, despite missing five games due to injury. For Barnes, who now has a four-game point streak, the assist was his team-leading seventh of the season.
Kenyon took that one-goal lead into halftime and beyond. Ohio Wesleyan managed just three first-half shots, but started to gain traction in the second 45 minutes of play. It wasn't until the 77:12 mark, however, that the Battling Bishops finally broke through. They chalked up a goal from Colton Bloecher, who leads the team with 11 goals on the season and leads the conference with 67 shots taken.
The Battling Bishops went on to outshoot Kenyon 12-4 in the second half and 19-13 for the game. Kenyon had three shots in the two overtime periods and Ohio Wesleyan had four.
The draw moved Kenyon's records to 11-3-2 overall and 4-0-2 in conference play. Combined with Oberlin College's loss to Denison University, the tie also put Kenyon in sole possession of second place in the NCAC standings. Ohio Wesleyan owns the top spot with a 16-0-1 overall record and a 5-0-1 mark in conference competition.
