WOOSTER, Ohio – Saturday's match against The College of Wooster marked the end of the regular season for the Kenyon College field hockey team, and the Ladies rode out on a high note with a 3-2 victory over the Fighting Scots. Maddie Breschi made waves by scoring the game-winning goal with just 23 seconds remaining in regulation to hand the Ladies their 10th
conference win of the season. The win will send Kenyon into the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament with the third seed.
Wooster scored both of its goals just minutes apart with one coming in on each side of the half. Taylor Thorp and Kerry O'Connor marked up the scoreboard for the Scots and each goal was assisted by the Nikki Sever. Following Alex Bair's fifth goal of the season after eclipsing the 10-minute mark, Wooster posted both of their goals a little more than four minutes of game time apart. Thorp's tally came in the 34th minute and was followed by O'Connor's in the 38th minute.
Kenyon peppered Wooster goaltender Meredith Farley with a grand total of 23 shots, 11 coming in the first half. The Ladies' relentless attack continued in the second half and paid dividends in the late minutes of the match. Bair entered the stat sheet for the second time when she set up Hannah Drake for the game-tying goal at 52:56. The goal marked Drake's fourth of the year.
As the seconds ticked off the clock and Kenyon's offensive bombardment continued, Breschi and the Ladies marched their way up the field for the game-winning drive. Breschi did it all herself, scoring her team-leading 17th goal of the season with 23 seconds remaining in the match to give Kenyon a 3-2 lead. Wooster called a timeout to collect itself and form a play to equal the score, but as it had all day the Kenyon defense was stout and did not allow a shot off to hold on for the win.
The goal also had significance in Kenyon Field Hockey history. With the goal, Breschi is now the program's all-time leader in points for a single season (42) and tied for first all-time in single-season goals scored.
The Ladies controlled the match on the offensive end from start to finish, limited the Scots to five shots over 70 minutes of play, bettering them by 18 shots. The penalty corner advantage went the Ladies' way, as well, by a wide 22-3 margin.
With the regular season finished, the Ladies will take their 12-6, 10-4 NCAC records into the conference tournament as the third overall seed out of four team that get to advance. DePauw University (15-4, 13-1 NCAC) holds the edge for the number-one seed by tiebreaker over Denison University (17-1, 13-1 NCAC). Wooster (9-9) slipped into the tournament, now 7-7 in conference play, as the four-seed.
