GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies and The College of Wooster Fighting Scots have a little history together when it comes to the North Coast Athletic Conference women's lacrosse tournament. Saturday, the two teams will renew acquaintances in the championship game of the tournament, which will be played at Mavec Field beginning at 5 p.m.
In 2009 and 2010 Kenyon met in the NCAC championship game. Wooster won by an 11-6 count in 2009 and then by a 10-8 final in 2010. Kenyon, however, was awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and wound up knocking off Wooster in the first round of the national competition.
As for Saturday, Kenyon enters play as the tournament's No. 2 seed. The Ladies are 12-2 and advanced to the final by topping two-time defending tournament champion Denison University, 12-8, Thursday evening. Wooster, the No. 4 seed, pulled off an upset that same night, shocking No. 1-seeded Wittenberg University in the other NCAC semifinal contest. With that win, the Fighting Scots improved their record to 13-4.
Wooster has a wave of goal-scorers including Ellie Hudson-Heck, who scored with two seconds remaining in regulation to push the Scots into overtime with Wittenberg. She then scored twice in overtime to give Wooster the win. For the season, Hudson-Heck has a team-high 44 goals to go along with nine assists. Eliza Perry leads the squad with 61 points on 33 goals and 28 assists. Claire Nelson-Johnson has scored 43 times for the Scots and Shelby Stone has 33 goals and a dozen assists.
Kenyon matches that firepower with the senior combo of
Emily Nichols and
Leah Sack. Nichols has a team-best 52 goals this season and ranks second all-time at Kenyon with 184 career goals. Sack owns every Kenyon assist record, as well as every NCAC assist record. She has 71 assists this season and 172 for her career. Nichols and Sack both had five-point games in the Ladies' semifinal win over Denison. Kenyon gets further offensive reinforcements from sophomore Jane Symmes and junior
Alex Bair, both 40-goal scorers.
Defensively, Kenyon leans on goalkeeper
Meredith Bentsen, who has 100 saves and an 8.79 goals against average. At the other end of the field, Wooster's last line of defense is Shawna Ferris, who has ten starts, 93 saves, and an 8.10 goals against average.
During the regular season, these two teams met in Gambier on April 20. The Ladies got four goals from Nichols and nine assists from Sack to ring up a 14-8 win.
As mandated by the conference office, the price of admission for Saturday's championship game is $5 for adults and $3 for children (18 and under) and students without a college identification card. NCAC student with proper identification will be admitted free of charge.
