GAMBIER, Ohio – With a 14-9 victory over The College of Wooster in Saturday's championship game, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team captured the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference title and earned an automatic berth in the upcoming NCAA Division III Tournament. The NCAC title was the Ladies' first since joining the conference in the 1984-85 academic year.
The win pushed Kenyon's season record to 13-2 and extended the Ladies' win streak to a program-record nine games. Wooster, a program that has won six NCAC Tournament titles, concluded its campaign with a record of 13-5.
Kenyon ran into a little trouble early in the game, as Wooster dominated possession and played a deliberate style of offense. The tactic worked for a while and resulted in the game's first two goals for the Fighting Scots. After that second goal, the Ladies won the draw and finally gained possession. Senior
Emily Nichols ended up taking the Ladies' first shot and scored off an assist from
Leah Sack at the 23:25 mark.
That goal broke the ice for the Ladies, who proceeded to rattle of four straight scores in a five-minute span. After Nichols' goal, Katherine Lang, Jane Symmes, and
Alex Bair all scored for Kenyon. Before the halftime horn sounded, Symmes, Lang and Bair each scored again to give the Ladies an 8-4 cushion.
Wooster then opened the second half with two quick goals and pulled within two of the lead. That, however, would be as close as the Fighting Scots would get. Nichols scored three more times in the half and launched the Ladies to victory.
Both Nichols and Bair finished the game with four goals and an assist. Symmes chalked up three goals and an assist. Sack tallied three assists and Ansen Burr chipped in with one goal and one assist for the Ladies, who outshot Wooster 32-28.
On the opposite side of the field, the Kenyon defense forced 16 turnovers and goalkeeper
Meredith Bentsen made 11 saves.
The Ladies will learn about the road ahead when the NCAA releases the tournament bracket on Sunday at 9:30 p.m. The first round of the NCAA Tournament will begin Wednesday, May 8. For Kenyon, the appearance on the national stage will be its second. In 2010, the Ladies received an at-large bid and became the first team in NCAC history to win an NCAA tournament game.
