WASHINGTON, Pa. – Two quick strikes late in Friday's game propelled the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team to a season-opening win over the Kenyon College Ladies. Kenyon had three different players score goals, but that wasn't enough to hold off the Presidents, who rallied for a 5-3 victory.

Kenyon (0-1) got on the board first when junior Rachel Hall connected with sophomore Maddie Breschi off a penalty corner. Breschi's score crossed the goal line just 5:11 into the contest.

Washington & Jefferson (1-0) tied things up ten minutes later, but before the half arrived Kenyon was able to move back in front. This time the Ladies junior tandem of Julie Freedman and Cecilia Depman hooked up to give Kenyon a 2-1 lead. Freedman was credited with the assist on the goal that Depman scored off a deflection in front of the cage.

The Presidents picked up the pace in the second half and attacked early. Amanda Steffey scored just about four minutes into the frame to knot things back up. Less than eight minutes later, Gina Taglieri, who assisted on Steffey's goal, netted her own goal to give the Presidents their first lead of the game.

That lead did not last very long, though. Less than two minutes after Taglieri's goal, Hall came through again for Kenyon, scoring off a rebound and tying the game up 3-3 with about 22 minutes left to play.

Washington and Jefferson then took control with back-to-back goals scored within 15 seconds of each other. With 12:50 on the clock, Natalie Paul scored on a shot from the top of the arc. Taglieri then scored off a breakaway with 12:35 left.

Both teams were efficient with their shots. Kenyon scored its three goals on just ten shots, while Washington and Jefferson scored its five goals using only eight shots.
