DELAWARE, Ohio – Josh Lee and the Kenyon College men's soccer team provided a dramatic start to the 2013 campaign with a goal in the final minutes of regulation, forcing overtime against the Kean University Cougars. The celebration did not last, however, when five minutes into the first overtime session the Cougars scored the game-winning goal to drop the Lords on Opening Day, 2-1. The match was hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex as part of the Fred Myers Invitational.
Lee, a freshman midfielder playing in his first collegiate game, entered the match off the bench and made the most of his lone shot attempt of the game. The Lords trailed 1-0 heading into the final three minutes of regulation when junior Nate Petrou led a late charge to the Kean cage, launching a shot off of Cougar goalkeeper Tyler Callahan. The rebound from Petrou's shot was taken in and fired to the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 with 2:22 left on the clock. Both teams rode the tie into overtime without another shot recorded.
Kean (1-0) benefitted from four straight corner kicks acquired early in the overtime session, three of which recorded within a minute of time. Though none led directly to the game-winning tally, the pressure continued to be applied until Kean's Kenny Rocha accepted a long pass from his own keeper and put home the deciding goal at 94:56.
The Cougar's first goal was scored by Stephen Moll just after the turn of the 18th minute of the match. Kean's offense pressed deep into Kenyon territory and after the ball squirmed out of congestion mounting in the box, Moll put home the first goal to take an early lead.
The Lords placed 11 shots against the Cougars, five of which landed on goal. Three different players contributed a pair of shot attempts including Alistair Flynn, Sam Justice, and Petrou. Kenyon goaltender Charlie Yamamoto made five saves on seven attempts against in just under 95 minutes played.
Kenyon (0-1) will continue their stay in Delaware on Saturday, for their second and final game of the tournament against Calvin College. Kickoff against the Knights is set for 5 p.m. from the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
