RICHMOND, Ind. – The schedule ahead shows nothing but conference games for the Kenyon College field hockey team and Friday's 4-1 win over the Earlham College Quakers was a good start. The game was the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams and the win was the Ladies' third in a row.
Kenyon (3-2, 1-0 NCAC) has consistently dominated the Quakers. The Ladies are 43-10-2 all-time against Earlham and Friday's win was their 20th straight in the series.
Friday, junior Cecilia Depman got the ball rolling. She popped in Kenyon's first goal off an assist from sophomore Hannah Drake. That goal crossed the goal line just 11 minutes into the contest. Two minutes after that, the Ladies struck again. This time it was junior Rachel Hall. Hall, the reigning NCAC Player of the Week, now leads the team, as well as the entire conference, with seven goals this season.
In the second half of play, junior Julie Freedman and sophomore Maddie Breschi, who had the assist on Hall's goal, netted the final two Kenyon scores. Both were unassisted.
The only blemish on Kenyon's side of the stat sheet was a shot taken by Earlham's Megan Hut. It was the only shot of the game for the Quakers, but it did manage to find its way into the Kenyon cage. While Earlham (2-1, 0-1 NCAC) chalked up just one shot, Kenyon fired 26.
The game was a good tune-up for the Ladies, who now look forward to facing DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana on Saturday. DePauw is a team with a 1-3 record, but owns a No. 11 national ranking and is coming off a season in which it made it to the NCAA Division III Tournament Final Four.
