Box Score
GAMBIER, Ohio – The good times continued to roll at Mavec Field on Wednesday evening when
Tony Amolo led the Kenyon College Lords soccer team to its third straight win. The Lords scored early and held off an aggressive Wilmington College team to record a 3-1 victory in the team's home opening match.
Amolo scored a goal and added an assist later in the match to lead the Lords offensively, but had multiple additional scoring chances over the course of the night. His first dent on the box score occurred in the opening minutes when he was set up perfectly by fellow freshman Josh Lee for a header attempt. After receiving a cross from the right side of the pitch, Amolo laid a good header in and drove it past Wilmington goalkeeper Anton Niklasson. Amolo now owns the team lead for goals scored with four on the year.
The Quakers slowly began to tighten up the defense but struggled to get its offense going. The Lords clamped down and allowed just two shots in the opening 45 minutes, though Wilmington's offense would later surface.
Jordan Glassman doubled the Lords lead with his first goal of the season when the Lords once again struck in the opening minutes of the restart. In the 48th minute, Sam Justice and Rei Mitsuyama touched it up to Glassman off a free kick to put the Lords up, 2-0. However, the Lords' defense began to loosen up with its lead and less than three minutes later the Quakers gained some ground on their hosts.
After the turn of the 50-minute mark, Wilmington's Nick Toney slipped behind the Lords' defense after the Quakers drove the ball the other way. Toney took it himself and notched his third goal of the season and halved Kenyon's lead.
Wilmington nearly tied the game after it began sending shots in against Kenyon keeper Sam Clougher, totaling 11 in the second half. In nearly a 30-second span of time after scoring their lone goal, the Quakers had two opportunities for a second. Henrik Hornnaess threw in a shot that Clougher deflected away, forcing a corner kick. Wilmington quickly continued its assault when Daniel Wicks went low on Clougher, but the freshman made the correct read and made a diving save to preserve the lead.
Kenyon held off the charge and added a third goal in the waning minutes of the match. The Quakers attempted to force the ball up and out of their side of the field but Amolo got into the mix and forced a turnover before touching the ball up to Alistair Flynn. Flynn then beat one defender and put on a solid strike for his first goal of the season. Kenyon ran out the clock and earned its fifth win of the year.
Clougher finished the match with five saves, all coming in the second half. The shot count between the two teams was level, each putting up 13 attempts.
Now with three straight wins and four out of the Lords' last five, Kenyon (5-2-0) will hit the road to square off against the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio on Sept. 21. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
