Box Score
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio  – It was all about the offense for the Kenyon College field hockey team, paced by
Maddie Breschi and
Christine Bloom's multiple goal match against Wittenberg University. The Ladies set a new 2013 season high in goals scored in a game in their 6-1 win over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
Four first-half goals by the Ladies paced them toward victory against Wittenberg. The combination of Bloom and Breschi set the tone in the first 30 minutes of the contest, each posting back-to-back goals in succession. Bloom began the run and did so less than four minutes into the match by cleaning up a shot by teammate Rachel Hall that was initially saved. Bloom scooped up the rebound from close range and put it home to put the Ladies up 1-0 early. Her second goal came just over 10 minutes later when from behind Tiger goaltender Laura Jansing, she wrapped around and targeted the back of the net to double up Kenyon's lead.
Breschi then continued the assault with the first of her two goals when in the 25th minute she took a steep angle shot from the right that beat Jansing and put the Ladies up 3-0. Not finished, she put another goal up on the board just after the 29-minute mark. Kenyon rode that lead into the half but did not wait long to keep extending that lead.
Kenyon scored its fifth unanswered goal just 2:42 into the second half off the stick of Alex Bair. She connected with Sammy Johnston for the goal, her first of the season. Anna Petek also scored her first goal of the year, set up by Alex Bair for her first goal of the season. At that point, the Ladies led the Tigers, 6-0.
Not until the 49th minute did Wittenberg get on the board when Andrea Mattingly broke up the shutout, but it was the only goal they would score.
Sydney Carney-Knisely made four saves in 53:14 before junior Michelle Picard subbed in for the remaining 16-plus minutes, where she made one save.
With their two goal games, Breschi now has six goals while Bloom resides with four on the season.
Kenyon (5-3-0, 3-1 NCAC) will next play on Saturday, Sept. 28 at rival Denison University. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
