DANVILLE, Ky. – The Kenyon College Lords soccer team notched two late goals Friday night and knocked out the Spalding University Golden Eagles, 2-0, on neutral turf. The contest was played at Centre College as part of the two-day, 24th annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic.
Kenyon (2-1) got the only goal it would really need from freshman Tony Amolo. He scored on an unassisted play at the 63:58 mark. It was the first goal of the freshman forward's collegiate career.
For good measure, Kenyon booted in one more score, this time at the 76:57 mark. Junior Alex Christoff set up the play and classmate Rei Mitsuyama finished it off. It was the second goal of the season for Mitsuyama and the second assist for Christoff.
Although the Lords offense didn't match the four-goal output it produced in its previous win, it did dominate the Golden Eagles (1-2). The Kenyon men maintained possession for most of the game and posted a convincing 25-7 advantage in shots.
Defensively, Kenyon allowed just one of those seven Spalding shots to be directed on goal, where it was saved by Sam Clougher. The freshman goalkeeper needed just that one save to record his first collegiate shutout.
The stakes will be raised Saturday, as the Lords take on the host Centre College Colonels at 7:30 p.m. Centre is a team that put together a 15-5-2 record one season ago and eliminated Ohio Wesleyan University from the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
