FROSTBURG, Md. – Kenyon College junior Rachel Hall scored two goals Saturday and helped lift the Ladies field hockey team to an impressive 6-1 win over the host Frostburg State University Bobcats. The win was the Ladies' first of the season and came in the first day of Frostburg's two-day, four-team tournament.
Kenyon (1-2) used a balanced attack that featured five different goal-scorers and produced a huge 40-15 shot advantage.
Sophomore Maddie Breschi put the first goal of the game on the board about six minutes into action. Julie Freedman took the initial shot, which was saved by Frostburg's Megan Grimm, but the rebound came out to Breschi, who jammed it home for her second goal of the season.
Frostburg (1-1) netted the equalizer, but Cecilia Depman's goal in the game's 23rd minute put Kenyon ahead for good. The goal was set up by sophomore Christine Bloom and was the second of the season for Depman. Bloom then scored her own goal just before halftime. Using an assist from Breschi, Bloom tipped in her shot to push the Ladies ahead 3-1.
With a two-goal cushion, Hall doubled the Ladies' margin within the first 13 minutes of the second half. Her goals, scored about seven minutes apart, were set up by Bloom, who finished the game with a goal and two assists, and Alex Bair.
Finally, with 15 minutes still remaining, Kenyon pumped in one more goal. This time it came from sophomore Hannah Drake off an assist from Sammy Johnston.
The Ladies' total of six goals was the best under second-year head coach Jacque DeMarco and the best since a 6-1 win over Oberlin College late in the 2011 season.
With the win, Kenyon earned its spot in the tournament's championship game and awaits the winner of Saturday afternoon's contest between Randolph-Macon and Transylvania. Sunday's championship game will be played at noon.
