ALLIANCE, Ohio – Kenyon College women's lacrosse engaged in a Sunday matchup with the University of Mount Union, but landed on the wrong side of a seven-goal decision. The Raiders used a three-goal run in the middle of the first half and a strong start to the second to separate from the Ladies in its 13-6 win over Kenyon.
Caroline Shipman helped the Ladies', who dropped their first match of the season, keep pace with the Raiders early on. The junior scored two of her four goals in the opening 15 minutes, including the score that tied the game at three prior to Mount Union's run. After Shipman's second goal, the Raiders (3-1) made a push forward with goals from Katherine Doraty, Emily Bergert, and Susie Kraus, all in succession, to propel the hosts to a 6-3 lead.
Kenyon (4-1) was only able to score twice more, including a third strike from Shipman, while the Raiders rolled out a total of eight first-half goals.
The second half began on a rough note for Kenyon as four different Raiders scored to open the stanza and put the game out of reach for the Ladies. Mount Union held a vast advantage on ground balls acquired in the second half, collecting 12 to Kenyon's five. Mount Union also outshot Kenyon in both the first and second half, finishing the game with a 34-18 advantage.
Amy Morgan served as the only additional goal scorer for Kenyon, hitting the back of the net twice on three shots. Shipman closed out the day with four goals on five shots. Meredith Bentsen made 12 saves in the loss.
Kenyon's next two contests will be held at Mavec Field, beginning with a faceoff with Washington and Jefferson College on March 22, set to begin at 2 p.m.
