GAMBIER, Ohio  – Behind a four-goal effort from Alex Bair, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team defeated Otterbein University, 10-7, at Mavec Field on Thursday evening. The Ladies, propelled by a seven-goal first period, ran out to a five-goal advantage heading into the half and never looked back. Caroline Shipman put forth a five-point day to aid in Kenyon's sixth win of the season.

The Ladies (6-1) started off on the right foot, scoring twice before the Cardinals' offense threatened at all. Shipman got the Ladies on the board by recovering her own rebound on a saved shot attempt and then finished the job. Kate Lang scored less than one minute later straight off the draw.

After Otterbein (7-3) tied the game, 2-2, Bair took over the show by scoring all four of her goals in succession to build Kenyon's lead. Her fourth and final goal came within the final two minutes of the first half and capped off a man-advantage opportunity that resulted from a yellow card given to the Cardinals' Spencer Kurtzahn. Toward the tail end of the man-up chance, Bair fired in a strike that tickled the twine to put Kenyon up 6-2. Shipman added one more before the end of the period to extend the Ladies' lead to five goals with 21 seconds remaining in the half.

Kenyon controlled much of the first by outshooting the Cardinals 14-6 and caused 11 Otterbein turnovers. Of goaltender Meredith Bentsen's three saves, two came in the first half.

The Cardinals turned it up in the second half, scoring four of the next five goals to narrow the margin. Ansen Burr broke up the ensemble of goals with one of her own, but Otterbein found themselves back in contention with just under 12 minutes remaining. Kelly Russell helped the Ladies regain control of the match with her third goal of the season, which put Kenyon up by three with 8:52 to go. Both teams' defenses went to work, where a combined five turnovers were committed by both squads before the next goal was scored.

That next goal, which put the game well out of reach for the Cardinals, was scored by Shipman, capping off a five-point game for the junior. Shipman scored three times and added a pair of helpers. Bair notched four goals and took in three ground balls, as well.

Kenyon will open the North Coast Athletic Conference season in its next contest at Oberlin College on March 29. The Ladies and Yeowomen will line up for the first draw at 12 p.m.
