GAMBIER, Ohio – The Wittenberg University Tigers broke out of the gate with five straight goals to begin Tuesday's women's lacrosse game at Mavec Field. They rode that quick start, as well as some excellent goaltending, to a 17-12 conference victory over the host Kenyon College Ladies.
Kenyon was able to temporarily halt the Tigers' momentum with consecutive goals from
Alex Bair,
Kate Lang, and
Caroline Shipman, but the Wittenberg women responded with four more tallies and took a commanding 9-3 lead into the halftime break.
Throughout the game, Kenyon matched Wittenberg shot-for-shot, but Tigers goalkeeper Katie Reuter continually frustrated the Ladies with some impressive saves. In all, Reuter made 13 stops and many of those came in free-position situations. The Ladies were held to just two goals on nine free-positions shots. At the other end of the field, the Tigers racked up six goals on eight free-position shots.
The deficit at halftime proved to be motivation for Kenyon, which stormed back on to the field and rattled off four straight scores. Two more goals from Shipman were followed by another from Bair and one from
Allie McLane. The spurt drew the Ladies within two goals (9-7) of Wittenberg. That, however, would be as close as Kenyon would get. Wittenberg's Francine Murzynski, who had a game-high five goals, scored four of them in the second half to keep her Tigers in front.
Shipman ended the contest with a team-high four goals and five points for Kenyon, which slipped to 6-3 overall and 0-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference action. Bair had three goals and an assist, while McLane tacked on two scores for the Ladies.
In addition to Murzynski's five goals, Wittenberg received four goals apiece from Megan Loofbourrow and Logan Warye. The win improved the Tigers' record to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in NCAC play.
