Senior Julie Freedman scored the lone goal in Kenyon's 4-1 loss against Washington College
in the first round of the Frostburg State University Tournament.FROSTBURG, Md. – The Kenyon College field hockey team made the long trek to Maryland to suffer its first loss of the season. Saturday, the Ladies dropped a 4-1 decision to the Washington College Shorewomen in the opening round of the two-day, four-team Frostburg State University Tournament.
Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Davis was a thorn in the Ladies' side throughout the game. She started the scoring with a Washington goal at the 14:26 mark of the first half. Less than ten minutes later, Davis assisted on a goal scored by Katie Arnold, who put the Shorewomen ahead 2-0 at intermission.
About 20 minutes into the second half, Davis struck again. This time she feed Jenn Miller for the third Washington goal.
Kenyon answered with a late goal from senior
Julie Freedman, her first of the season. She was set up by junior
Maddie Breschi, who now has a goal and two assists in the Ladies' first three games. That lone Kenyon goal was countered with a final tally from the Shorewomen. This time, Davis had nothing to do with it. It was Alli Dudley who tacked on the meaningless goal with a little less than three minutes to play.
The Kenyon offense once again outshot its opponent (22-14), but a combination of misfires and six saves from Washington keeper Sadie Robertson limited the Ladies to just the one goal. Through their first three games, the Ladies (2-1) out-shot their opponents by nearly a 2-1 total margin (74-40).
Washington (3-0) now moves on to play host Frostburg State in Sunday's tournament championship game. Kenyon will take part in Sunday's consolation game against Transylvania University, which suffered a 5-0 defeat to Frostburg State on Saturday.
