Box Score
GAMBIER, Ohio – With daylight nearly gone, the fifth-ranked Kenyon College men's soccer team earned a 2-1 double-overtime victory against #20 Carnegie Mellon University on Friday evening in both team's season opener.
With about three minutes left in the second extra session,
Collyn Carpenter deflected the ball off a Tartans defender and the loose possession came to the feet of
Oliver Wynn who fired into the right corner. It was the Lords' third straight win in the series dating back to 2014.
The Lords got off on the right foot early with a near goal off a header from
Woo Jeon in the 20th minute. Just a few minutes later, a foul was called against Carnegie in the box resulting in a penalty kick. But Wynn's attempt was saved by Carnegie keeper Alec Lam.
First-half offensive action for the Tartans was extremely slow as they found no attempts on goal against freshman
Ian McInturf.
Early in the second half,
Brice Koval put the Lords up 1-0. At the 49:23 mark, the junior navigated from the top of the 18-yard box left and fired back right past a diving Lam.
That 1-0 score remained until the 89th minute. After the Lords lost possession around midfield, Jimmy Jameson headed a shot over McInturf tying the match at 1-1.
In the first overtime, there were just a pair of shots – both to Carnegie. Then in the second, Wynn added another game-winning goal to his resume lifting Kenyon to a season-opening victory.
Things do not get easier for the Lords who will next travel to John Carroll University, an NCAA Tournament participant from last season. That contest will start on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Senior Oliver Wynn scored the game-winning goal on Friday as the #5 Lords
defeated #20 Carnegie Mellon 2-1 in double overtime.
