INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- After securing a spot in the 'Sweet 16' of the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship with a pair of home wins, the Kenyon College men's soccer program found out on Monday from the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Committee that it would be staying home for their next matchup. The Kenyon College Owls will be hosting two 'Sweet 16' matches and an 'Elite 8' clash as Mavec Field and Gambier, Ohio, continue to play host to the NCAA Tournament. The two 'Sweet 16' games are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, before an 'Elite 8' bout between Saturday's winners at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20.
The Owls earned the right to continue hosting after taking care of business on their home field in the tournament's first two rounds. Kenyon opened the tournament with a dominant 6-1 win over Greenville University in the round of 64 before collecting a 4-0 shutout win in the round of 32 against Calvin University, the No. 17-ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Top 25 and No. 6-ranked squad in the D3soccer.com poll, a day later.
The Owls, ranked No. 3 by the (USC) and No. 5 by D3soccer.com, are advancing to the third round for the third time in the last four NCAA Tournaments. Kenyon reached the 'Sweet 16' in consecutive seasons in 2019 and 2018, and the program hosted its 2019 matchup against Montclair State University. With a win on Saturday, Kenyon would advance to the 'Elite 8' for the third time under Head Coach Chris Brown and the fifth time in program history.
Before Kenyon takes the field for Saturday's second 'Sweet 16' match, Williams College (7-1-11) and Ohio Northern University (13-3-5) will face off at 11 a.m. on Mavec Field. Williams will be designated as the home team against ONU after upsetting No. 1-ranked Messiah University in the round of 32. After the game remained scoreless through full time and two overtime periods, the Ephs advanced after earning a 4-3 edge in penalty kicks. Ohio Northern also punched their ticket after prevailing on penalty kicks, edging out No.15-ranked North Park University 4-3 in PKs after a scoreless 110 minutes. The Polar Bears are ranked No. 11 in the USC poll and are receiving votes in the D3soccer.com Top 25. Looking ahead at a potential 'Elite 8' matchup, Kenyon is 11-2-2 all-time against ONU, including a 6-2 win in this year's season opener. Conversely, this would be Kenyon's first time meeting Williams, as the Owls have never lined up against the Ephs.
After the conclusion of the clash between Williams and ONU, Kenyon (18-1-1) will take the field to face Washington and Lee University (16-2-4). W&L earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. The Generals hosted their opening-round matches, winning 5-1 over Brevard College before a 5-2 victory against Muhlenberg College. W&L and Kenyon are two of the three teams to score 10 goals in this year's NCAA Tournament and the only two teams to score four or more goals in each game. The Generals are ranked 22nd in the USC poll and ninth in the D3soccer.com Top 25.
Per NCAA policy, ticket prices for one tournament game are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and $3 for children ages 3-12. Students carrying a Kenyon ID will be admitted free of charge.
