Gono Phiri competes in Polar Bear Final

ADA, Ohio -- Sophomore Tapiwa Gono Phiri was the lone member of the Kenyon College men's indoor track and field team to compete Saturday in Ohio Northern University's Polar Bear Final Qualifier, a meet set up to give athletes one more shot at qualifying for nationals.

Gono Phiri gave it a run in the 60-meter dash, but didn't quite get the outcome he wanted. He finished his preliminary heat in 7.16 seconds. That placed him ninth overall and one spot shy of qualifying for the meet's final heat.

Entering the competition, Gono Phiri had a season-best time of 7.02 seconds, which tied the Kenyon record, one he previously set last season. Before this weekend's competition, that mark ranked outside of the top 50 times among all NCAA Division III sprinters.

Gono Phiri and the rest of the Kenyon team will be back in action at the end of the month, when the outdoor season kicks off with a two-day meet at Oberlin College.
