Soric, Brown stand out at Steemer Showcase

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- In Saturday's crowded Steemer Showcase at Wittenberg University, the Kenyon College women's indoor track and field team registered a dozen points and placed 14th in a slate of 19 teams.

Ten of Kenyon's 12 points came from junior Paula Soric, who won the triple jump. Going up against 15 other jumpers, Soric topped the field with a best jump of 37-5¼ (11.41 meters). Her first three attempts all came in under 11 meters, but she dialed up the big number on her fourth attempt. She later fouled on her fifth run at it and then posted a 37-3¼ on her final jump.

Kenyon's other two team points came from sophomore Anna Brown. She finished the mile run in a time of 5:19.14. That was good for seventh place in a field of 40 other runners. It also went in the books as Brown's collegiate best time in the event.

While those two were the only point-getters for Kenyon, the Owls did have a handful of other top-20 individual finishes. At the start of the day, first-year Olivia Ide claimed 13th place among 56 runners in the 3,000-meter race. She clocked in with a time of 10:42.12.

Later, in the 800-meter run, senior Lorien Kauffman clocked in with a season-best 2:29.21 to take 12th place in a field of 30.

Back in field events, first-year Olivia Gumz tied for 15th place in the high jump, clearing 4-7½ (1.41 meters).

The Kenyon team will be back in action next Saturday, when it heads to Denison University for the annual Bob Shannon Invitational.
