Greville claims fifth, sets record in NCAC heptathlon

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Feeling at home in the confines of Barrett A. Toan Track, Kenyon College sophomore Josh Greville placed fifth among 12 other student-athletes and set a program record in the two-day North Coast Athletic Conference heptathlon, a precursor to next weekend's conference championship meet.

For his efforts, Greville starts the Owls out with four team points that carry over to the championship meet, which will also be held at Kenyon on Friday and Saturday.

Yesterday, Greville fared best in the high jump. He cleared 5-9 ¼ (1.76 meters) to take fourth place in the event. That same day, he placed seventh in the long jump, eighth in the 60-meter dash and ninth in the shot put. His best leap in the long jump measured 19-1 ½ (5.83 meters). His time in the 60 was 7.55 seconds and his best toss in the shot put traveled 29-0 (8.83 meters).

When competition resumed Sunday, Greville logged a seventh-place time of 9.66 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. That was followed by a fifth-place finish in the pole vault, as he cleared 12-6 ¾ (3.83 meters).

Then, in the heptathlon's final event, Greville bolted to a first-place finish in the 1,000-meter run. He clocked in with a winning time of 2:52.63.

Those results gave Greville a final total of 4,171 points and landed him in fifth place, just one point behind fourth-place finisher Michael Strange from Ohio Wesleyan University. Greville's total also topped Kenyon's previous heptathlon record 4,076 set by Colton Orr in 2016.

Jacob Brown from Denison University won the competition with 4,895 points. Daniel Jansen of DePauw University was second with 4,521 points and Sam Callinan of Wittenberg University was third with 4,204 points.
