GAMBIER, Ohio -- The 2024 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships ended on Saturday evening on Kenyon College's Barrett A. Toan Indoor Track. When the sun set on the conference finale, the hosting Owls men's track and field notched one individual title, two program records, and 48 points to finish eighth on their home track.

Despite matching last season's eight-place team finish, Kenyon's 48 points are the most the team has amassed since the 2002 NCAC Championships when the program tied for fourth with 72 points. This 2024 total marks the fourth time (2003, 2007, 2011) the team scored 40 or more points at an NCAC Indoor Championship meet after that 2002 campaign.

Tapiwa Gono Phiri took top billing for the Owls, adding points in each of the four events he competed and recording two record-setting times. The junior, who set a pair of program records in yesterday's 60- and 200-meter dash preliminaries, started strong when he ran the second leg of the 4x200-meter relay. The rest of the Kenyon quartet included Emmanuel Makelele, Kendall Weaver, and Collin Witt, and the foursome finished with a time of 1:32.16. The mark was good for sixth place and three points, and it broke the program record of 1:32.52 set by Makelele, Gono Phiri, Witt, and Julius Thompson 364 days ago at last year's NCAC Indoor Championships.

After finishing third with a program-record time of 6.95 in yesterday's 60-meter dash prelim, Gono Phiro hit another gear in the event final. The 2022 NCAC 60-meter dash Champion finished the sprint in 6.92 seconds to claim the conference crown and contribute 10 points to Kenyon's team total. The time goes down as a College record and was just 0.04 seconds slower than the 10-year-old NCAC record of 6.88. 

Gono Phiri kept it going in the 200-meter dash, his penultimate race. He claimed a spot on the podium after clocking in at 22.59, taking third place and tallying six more team points. Finally, the sprinter secured another point in the 4x400-meter relay, the final event of the night. The team of Witt, Gono Phiri, Jonathan Turner, and Makelele finished eighth at 3:31.59, Kenyon's top time in the event this season.

Three other track events, all of the distance variety, accounted for five more Kenyon points. Peter Bernhardt raced to a sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter race to tack on three points. The junior crossed the line at 8:50.91, a season-best time for the Owls. In the mile, first-year Arthur Wellenstein stopped the clock at 4:26.31, just 0.03 seconds back of seventh and 0.11 seconds behind sixth. The mark was also a team-best and personal-best time this season. Another eighth-place finish added another point when Dylan Sibbitt clocked in at 2:15.76 in the 800-meter race.

Before racking up points on the track, the Owls started the final day with three field events, and Kenyon's team tally increased by three after the contests finished. Riley Orth, Kenyon's lone title winner from day one, added all three points with a sixth-place showing in the weight throw. The senior registered a distance of 14.32 meters (47-0) on his first attempt, his only toss that counted after faults on his final four. Josh Greville also competed in the field, finishing 10th in the triple jump and 13th in the pole vault.

Wittenberg University broke Wabash College's two-year streak atop the team standings as the Tigers took the title with 130 points to surpass the second-place Little Giants (114). Oberlin College brought in bronze with 103 points, while The College of Wooster (90) and Denison University (87) were neck-and-neck in fourth and fifth, respectively. DePauw University (64) and Ohio Wesleyan University (60) slotted in above Kenyon, while Hiram College (6) rounded out the nine-team standings.
