Kenyon earns sixth-place spot at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's track and field team recorded 53 points Saturday and placed sixth in the 10-team field at Ohio Wesleyan University's annual Marv Frye Invitational. Thirty-four of those points came from the Owls' field athletes.

The Owls' top individual finish also came from a field athlete, senior Riley Orth. He posted a season-best measurement of 51-3 ¾ (15.64 meters) in the shot put. That was good for first place and 10 team points. Orth also added a sixth-place showing in hammer throw, recording a measurement of 151-5 (46.16 meters) and tacking on another three points to the Kenyon team total.

In the javelin, sophomore Will Margeson had a throw travel 144-11 (44.17 meters), which was good for third place, while senior Dylan Fuerst rang up a personal-best in the high jump, clearing 6-2 ¾ (1.90 meters). That placed him fourth and gained Kenyon five points.

Fuerst also scored four points for his fifth-place finish in the long jump. His best attempt was 20-7 ¼ (6.28 meters), just ahead of teammate and sophomore Ezekiel Kiwanuka, who claimed sixth place with a leap of 20-3 ½ (6.18 meters).

Kenyon's other field event score came from sophomore Samuel Eluemunoh, who got three points for his sixth-place result in the discus. His best throw in that event measured 131-0 (39.94 meters).

On the track, junior Tapiwa Gono Phiri headlined the Owls' results. In the 400-meter race, an event he usually does not compete in, Gono Phiri clocked in at 50.82, which was a personal-best and got him a fourth-place finish. Gono Phiri also ran the 200-meter dash, an event he is very familiar with, and placed fifth with a time of 22.10.

In the 800-meter run, junior William Wilson took an eighth-place finish in 2:01.59 and in the 5,000-meter run, Alex Shepherd, another junior, earned the fifth-place spot by turning in a personal-best time of 16:32.17.

Kenyon then wrapped up the meet with a fourth-place placement in the 4x400-meter relay. The quartet of Gono Phiri, Collin Witt, Emmanuel Makelele and Jonathan Turner crossed the finish line in 3:28.27 to score five points and finalize the Owls team score.

Baldwin Wallace University won the Invitational with 152 team points. Host Ohio Wesleyan was second with 121 points and Albion College was third with 107 points.

Kenyon will end up right back at Ohio Wesleyan again next weekend for the All-Ohio Championship.
