Kenyon kicks off spring slate in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Kenyon College men's golf team teed it up for the first time in the 2025 spring season this week in Savannah, Georgia with seven golfers across two events, competing at the Savannah Invitational and the Port City Classic for three rounds in two days.

The Owls tied for sixth out of 20 teams in the Savannah Invitational with a +13 score, while both competitors cracked the top 40 on the individual leaderboard at the Port City Classic.

Jaiden Koonar led the way at the Savannah Invitational, played at The Club at Savannah Harbor. Koonar came out on Monday with an opening round 73 (+1), firing four birdies on the 6,999-yard track. The team immediately turned around for another 18 holes in which he carded a team-low 69 (-3) with six birdies. Finally, he closed out the tournament on Tuesday afternoon with a 75 (+3) to put him T-17 on the individual leaderboard at one-over par. For the tournament, Koonar was T-4 in par 4 scoring at an even 4.0.

Up next for the Owls was Jonathan Oakes, who carded a four-over par 76 in the first 18 holes and came back with a three-over par 75 after Monday's second round. He jumped up the leaderboard after the third round on Tuesday, shooting 71 (-1) with four birdies on the day to wind up 43rd on the individual leaderboard at +6.

Will Hulsey climbed 14 spots on the final day of competition to reach 48th on the individual leaderboard at +7. After an 81 (+9) in the first round, he bounced back by tying the team-low round of 69 (-3) with no bogeys to get his tournament back on track. He closed out with a one-over 73 on Tuesday and ranked second for the tournament in pars, carding 39.

Not far behind was Armand Ouellette, who finished with a steady +9 for the tournament at T-57. He started off with a 76 and only improved from there, carding a 74 in the second 18 holes and 75 in the final round. He made seven birdies for the tournament, two in each of the Monday rounds and three on Tuesday.

Rounding out Kenyon's sixth place showing was Adrian Jordan, who was one of only three players to shoot an under par round for the Owls after a 71 (-1) on Monday. He came back with a 77 in round two and a 78 in round three to finish T-64 on the individual leaderboard.

As a team, the Owls ranked seventh in par three scoring (3.05), sixth in par four scoring (4.17), eighth in birdies (39) and second in pars (173) in the team's spring debut.

At the nearby Savannah Country Club, Oliver McGovern and Rafael Frias IV represented Kenyon at the Port City Classic, competing as independents at the 6,739-yard par 71 course.

McGovern paced Kenyon with a +15 mark, good enough for a T-24 finish on the individual leaderboard. He made a 76 on Monday's opening round and came back with a 78 in the second round, but bounced back with a solid 74 (+3) in the final 18 holes to sneak in the top 25.

Five shots behind was Frias, who was T-38 in his spring debut. After an 80 in his first and third rounds, he added a two-over 73 in the second round highlighted by a one-under 35 on the back nine, dropping seven birdies in the tournament.

Up next, the Owls will compete in the Tiger Invitational hosted by Hampden-Sydney College at Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina, starting on Sunday, March 9.
