Owls move to fifth place after first day of NCAC

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The Kenyon College women's track and field team got off to a good start Saturday, posting five top-eight finishes during the first day of the two-day North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championship, which is being hosted by DePauw University.

Those top-eight finishes resulted in 22 team points for the Owls, who now sit tied for fifth place in the team standings. The host Tigers are in first place with 88 points, followed by Wittenberg University (58.5), Ohio Wesleyan University (29), and Denison University (25). The College of Wooster (22) currently shares the fifth spot with Kenyon.

The Owls' top finisher Friday was senior Paula Soric. For the second straight season, she placed second in the long jump. Her best attempt at the championship measured 18-1 3/4
(5.53 meters). That finish was a career best for Soric, topping her previous best of 17-10 1/4 (5.44 meters). It was also worth eight points toward Kenyon's team total.

First-year Penelope Artemis had a busy day in the throwing pit. She began competition in the shot put, an event in which she placed fifth and earned four team points. Her best heave landed 36-7 ½ (11.16 meters) from the circle. Later in the day, she also claimed fifth place in the hammer throw. She hurled the weight 126-3 (38.49 meter) to account for a total of eight team points across the two events.

In running events, Olivia Ide placed fourth and scored five team points for her efforts in the 10,000-meter run. Her time of 37:55.09 was a personal record, clipping her old mark of 38:00.14, which was set a couple weeks ago at the All-Ohio Championship. Her time was just 27 seconds off the winning time and a little less than 12 seconds shy of gaining All-NCAC honors (top three finishers in each event).

At the end of the day, first-year Lucie Prior tacked on the team's final point, finishing eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Her time of 12:16.30 was a personal best, edging her previous best of 12:21.17, which she registered on April 5 at the Marv Frye Invitational.

The Owls will look to keep climbing the NCAC ladder tomorrow when the Championship meet resumes with field events at 10 a.m. and track events kicking off at 2:15 p.m.
