Owls off to best start since 2007-08 season

ORLANDO, Fla. -- With Wednesday's 7-0 win over Allegheny College, the Kenyon College men's tennis team ran its season record to 9-0, surpassing last year's 8-0 start, and logging the best start to a season since the 2007-08 Kenyon team opened with 15 straight wins.

The Owls' victory, which took place on neutral-site courts at the United States Tennis Association's National Campus, was the first match in a series of six over a nine-day span.

Singles play was a breeze for the Owls, who did not drop a set. At No. 6 singles, first-year Stylianos Papamichael didn't even drop a game, defeating Reid Stasolla 6-0, 6-0. At No. 1 and No. 3 singles, Paulo Pocasangre Kreling and Maximo Llamas Castellanos posted identical 6-2, 6-1 wins, respectively.

Kenyon's sweep of singles play also included a 6-4, 6-1 win from Alejandro Gonzalez at No. 2, a 6-0, 7-5 win from Juozas Cioladis at No. 4, and a 6-1, 6-2 victory from Rohan Sriram at No. 5.

In doubles play, the Owls made a clean sweep of the three matches, but it was not as easy. Jay Kedar Dixit and Eliezer Gonzalez held on for a 7-5 win at No. 3, while Alejandro Gonzalez and Pocasangre Kreling registered a 6-4 win at No. 1. Llamas Castellanos and Cioladis had smoother sailing in the No. 2 match, topping Allegheny's Benedek Kaibas and Adam Memije, 6-2.

The Kenyon team, which owns a No. 13 national rank, will get right back to action tomorrow with an 11 a.m. match against No. 18 Carnegie Mellon University.
